Panama hats are always a sure bet for summer style, and The Gill from Bailey of Hollywood is one that features a doubled over (or brisa) weave with a broad pre-snapped brim and narrow trim. The Lakewood is another Panama fedora from Bailey, this one featuring a slightly open weave, teardrop crown, and stingy contrast colored brim. Nobody does men's Panama hats quite like Borsalino, and the handwoven Panama Fino with snap brim is an example of that excellence. Blocked to perfection, the hat is trimmed with a black grosgrain band and bow and fitted with a soft grosgrain sweatband.
For something very different, Christys' Crown brings you The Sage, a braided fedora with a wonderful West Indies flavor. This textured men's hat boasts a brightly colored diagonal patterned trim with pin, and is simply outstanding. Stacy Adams offers something new as well with The Sinamay Fedora. Made from banana plant fibre, this woven hat body has a bound stingy brim, ribbon trim, and logo pin. It's a clean, fresh look for the contemporary hat wearer.
The hats from the Carlos by Carlos Santana line are crafted from a variety of natural fibres with The Tempo, for instance, made from toyo. A stingy brim fedora, the intricate pattern is anchored by a solid faux leather trim with ribbon overlay and bound brim. Look for the signature Santana guitar pin on the trim. Another stingy brim hat in toyo is called The Wave, and this classic fedora has a wide ribbon with contrast stitching on the band as well as the bound brim. One of my new favorites from Santana this season is The Influence, and when you see this stingy brim hat in palm leaf with its handsome bound brim, you'll like it too. The leather trim crosspiece features an embossed OM, the Hindu symbol of the Absolute, and the sweatband is a comfortable handwoven zarape or shawl-like fabric. It's all very cool.
Once you've seen the variety of casual straw gamblers, fedoras and dress hats offered by these top brand name hat makers, you'll never think quite the same about straw hats again. It's pretty amazing what they can do with a weed these days.
